Choosing tiles - Special Features & Considerations

There are several special tile features and application considerations that could need to be covered when choosing your tiles depending on the tiling application. Your tiler will be able to provide specific advice on your renovation project.

Tactiles

Tactiles are a specially designed floor tile which has a distinctly raised profile and are used to warn of hazards or provide orientational help for people with visual impairments.

  • Textured tile indicator – found on footpaths, stairs, and in train stations.
  • These tiles are required at every gradient or sloping surface in some applications.
  • They’re also required at the top and bottom of commercial or public stairs, as well as some private applications.

Levelling systems

This clip system is often used for large format and timber look rectified tiles to ensure a flat, even surface.

  • A 1.5mm joint is used to create a seamless flat surface.
  • A plastic clip spacer is used in conjunction with levelling wedges to ensure that the finished floor surface is lippage free with a 1mm tolerance.
  • Note that some large-format tiles can have a slight curve in the tile due to the length of the tile.

Tiling angle options

A tile angle, mitre or trim is used where an indoor tiled area meets another style of flooring such as a carpeted or timber area.

All external tiled edges need to be finished with an angle or mitre. Options include:

  • Matt black.
  • Gloss black.
  • Gold (brass).
  • Custom colours - angles can be powder coated to any colour.

Sealing natural stone tiles

Sealing is an application of a chemical solution to any type of porous surface, such as natural stone tile, which soaks in penetrating into the surface.

The sealer is generally invisible once applied and is designed to reduce the porosity of the surface, making it easier to clean and limiting the penetration of stains. The chemical compounds used as the active sealing agent vary depending on the type of protection required.
